Qingdao DCAS WC Exchange Programme

The SA team recently returned from the 12th Qingdao International Sailing Week and Qingdao International Marine Festival 2019. This is their report from a successful event… To encourage fairness and transparency, an invitation was presented to the Chairperson of WC Optimist Association who in turn invited all of the WC members to participate by submitting a short CV. The submissions were sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport who made the selection of the team

Lipton Cup 2019

This year’s Lipton Cup has been hailed as one of the greatest contests on SA waters in many years. The final result was only determined in the last few minutes of the last race after six days of racing on the newly introduced Cape31. Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club sailing Nitro, co-skippered by Mike Hayton and David Rae, emerged as the winners for the first time in the race’s history after a titanic battle on the last day.

Optimist Africans 2019

South Africa’s Sean Kavanagh just missed out on a podium place at the Optimist African Championships in the Seychelles by four points. Sailing against competitors significantly older, the 11-year-old Kavanagh enjoyed an excellent week of results, claiming wins in two of the 10 races, and never finishing outside the top 10.

Six-Regatta 2020 52 SUPER SERIES Season will open in Cape Town

The 2020 52 SUPER SERIES season will visit South Africa as the showcase curtain raiser to a six-regatta year, which will also feature four reliable, popular favourites in Europe. The world’s leading grand prix monohull circuit will start with two regattas in South Africa in March and April and return to the Mediterranean for regattas in Scarlino, Tuscany in May, Porto Cervo, Sardinia in June, and Valencia in July before concluding in Mallorca at Puerto Portals in September.

Walker finishes fifth at Optimist World Championships

South African teenager Ian Walker wrapped up a fantastic week of sailing at the Optimist World Championships in Antigua, just missing out on a podium spot. The 14-year-old was South Africa’s only representative at the championships and did the country proud, finishing in fifth place out of 255 competitors. This result ranks as one of the top achievements for South African sailors on the international stage.
