Over 85 young sailors from 10 different countries came together in Ljungskile, Sweden which is located in the heart of the province Bohuslän to attend the RS Tera World Challenge Trophy from the 4-9 August 2019.

The first days racing got off to a slow start with a highly inconsistent 5 knots breeze with large fluctuations in wind direction. The shifty and inconsistent winds continued for the entire week with wind speeds averaging between 4 and 10 knots which made it very challenging for the sailors to keep up with all the wind shifts and low breeze conditions.

The South African RS Tera Class Association was proudly represented by five sailors from across the country, two who competed in the RS Tera Sport Fleet and three in the RS Tera Pro Fleet.

Out of the 52 competitors in the Sport Fleet, Roux-Christopher le Rouxfrom Richards Bay finished in eighth place with his best result sixth. Hannah-Maria Sasman from Cape Town finished in 16th place with herbest result 10th. Hanna also finished second girl.

Out of 33 competitors in the Pro Fleet, Ashley Layland from Mossel Bay finished in 17th place with her best result eighth.Ruzaide Kannemeyer from Mossel Bay finished in 22ndplace with his best result 11th. Jowayden Jacobus, also from Mossel Bay,finished in 27thplace with his best result ninth.

This was an extremely special event for Ruzaide and Jowayden as they received sponsorship from the RS Tera International Class Association and RS Sailing, covering the costs of their entry fees and charter boats. Two Swedish families from the Ljungkile Segelsällskap not only welcomed both boys into their homes but made them part of their families for the week. A crowd funding initiative was set up by the Skipper Foundation and within two weeks, Ruzaide’s and Jowayden’s flight tickets and visa fees had been covered. This was only made possible with the kind help and generous donations from the RS Tera families across the globe as well as friends and family. This istruly what the RS Tera family is all about.

The South African RS Tera Class Association is extremely proud of these young sailorsaccomplishments.

Exciting news was announced in Ljungskile, that South Africa will be the next country to host the RS Tera World Championship which will be held at Pine Lake Marina, Swartvlei from the 4 -9 August 2020.

We hope to see all RS Tera Sailors at this year’s RS Tera Nationals that will be held at the SAS Youth Nationals at TSC from the 14 -19 December 2019. This will be great preparation for the 2020 RS Tera Worlds event and we encourage all to attend.
