This program is the practical aspect of sailing, that program is seeded  in the sport of sailing existing structures.

It follows picks on and picks up the sailor from the SA Sailing Learn to Sail program, to brings them into the into the SA Sailing sporting structure to support the rest of the sailing for life pathway. (refer to the Sailing pathway for more details) . 

The programs intention and aim, is to use sailing structures to work towards developing medal winners at all levels of competition, on a consistent basis

That being:

• Seeing increased participation by building confidence of new sailors for club and the fun participation events. In various categories across all sailing disciplines

• Encourages District sailors to work towards achieving good results.   i.e. Local  Interschool and Interclub events

• District Podium finishes  and emerging talent  can be identified to develop towards improving results and participation at  Regional/Provincial Class Championships

• Regional Podium finishes  and developed  talent  can be identified to develop towards improving results and participation at  National class Championship 

The programs’ focus and aim is achieved through though 6 key components that exist to aid the sailor/athletes to work at building up the skills and knowledge to improve performance.

The sailors at all levels of sailing ability once they know how to sail are able to engage and source or work with trained and certified SA Sailing Race Coaches. These race coaches trained and accredited by SA Sailing work independently from Club’s, Sailing Classes or Recognised Training Centre or any body of water that suits their training conditions requirements.

They are provided with the soft skills necessary to perform the role of a race coach, and are provided with the necessary information and details in terms of safety requirements and expectations in order to provide a safe training environment to all their athletes.  They are accredited by including legislation requirements, especially in terms of the law and Child Protection Act.

Given the diversity of the sport and all its disciplines the techincial knowledge on the boats is developed by the race coach in their own accord and with the respective  Sailing Classes and disciplines inline with the Classes accredited/suitable techniques etc.

Sailors are invited to source a coach, or to work with a varieties of coaches, as best suits their own personal training needs and requirements

Otherwise, alternatively explore the SA Sailing and its Clubs, classes to source a recogonised training program.

Race Coach Criteria Matrix

Race Coaches will operate independently from clubs and classes and offer performance development for club racing level upwards.  It is hoped that clubs will encourage coaching by offering performance coaches rights and access to operate from their venues.

It’s hoped that all clubs will look to and eventually have accredited race coaches operating out of their facilities and thus offering race coaching to their members.  The race coaches will work on performance development from the basic all the way up depending on their level of training and the requirements of the members at the facilities.  It’s hoped that this will provide the confidence to the sailors joining clubs or not yet traveling to events to be encouraged to do so. 

With the Senior race coach offering a more scientific approach with the inclusion of sports sciences and team management. They would be the preferred candidate to manage club teams for district completion on up through performance enhance for regional, national and even international class participation.

The SA Sailing Race Coaching will teach the soft skills associated with coaching performance, while the Classes will provide the technical “what to coach” information , as these skills are generally specific to their class or type of boat.  This will facilitate the coaches to cover all of SA Sailing sailings disciplines.

Further to this SASCOC at their AGM this year announced that all coaches will need to be accredited by themselves and that with immediate effect all coaches put forward for any National teams will need to reviewed to their standard and structure under an RPL process and that this would have a cost attached to it.  i.e. Team South Africa in that of Olympics, Youth Olympics etc. and further to this that National Federations should /must apply this to any national teams. 

This requirement is built into the race coach structure and will become part of the criteria requirements details that make up the Race Coach program.
