Michaela Robinson rises above the rest to join Upwind by MerConcept Squad

Michael Robinson is another of SA’s impressive young sailors making her mark on the international stage. She emerged successful after a rigorous selection process involving 120 applicants from 30 countries as one of just seven sailors to form part of Upwind by MerConcept squad.

Michaela initially made the shortlist of 16 sailors who were then invited to attend five days of both physical and technical tests, individual interviews and crewed sailing sessions in Concarneau, France to determine who would make the final squad.

She clearly impressed selectors and was announced as one of seven sailors who will now prepare to compete in the Ocean Fifty Series, which includes multiple events and stages of inshore and offshore racing.

“I am thrilled to have been selected to join Upwind by MerConcept, an all-female team to participate in the Ocean 50 Series,” she said. “This selection is more than becoming a professional sailor for me, it is fulfilling my dream to sail for a purpose-driven organization like MerConcept and 11th Hour Racing. It truly is a privilege to be working with some of my role models and learning from the best in the industry,” she added.

Michaela will be spending the next season racing with this group of incredible international sailors, growing and developing her talents under the watchful eye of Italian offshore sailor and Olympian Francesca Clapcich.

The first event of the circuit begins at the end of May, so training has already begun.

Speaking about the final squad, the selectors commented: “This marks a significant milestone in our journey to promote gender diversity in offshore sailing. After physical, mental, and sailing tests, these extraordinary athletes have emerged as the perfect fit for our team.”
