Event information

This application is for the Recognition of Prior Learning for Race Officers. It applies for both new applicants and those renewing their accreditation.

Assistant and Club/District Race officers do not have to follow a renewal process once accredited. Regional and National Race officers must renew every 4 (four) years.

Programme Prerequisites

  • Be a min of 18 years of age.
  • Attend a Race and Regatta Management Virtual Workshop for the level of accreditation applied for.  
    • Assistant and Club/District will be done by club, and 
    •  The virtual Regional and National Workshops are facilitated by SA Sailing only.
    • A written and/or practical may apply.
  • A portfolio of evidence of having demonstrated capability as a Race Officer at the level applied for which includes the minimum number of events as outlined in the Race Officer Criteria Matrix for that level. 

Programme Format

The Current format of the programme is

  • Attend a Race and Regatta Management Virtual Workshop for the level of accreditation applied for.  
  • Assistant and Club/District will be done by club, and 
  • The virtual Regional and National Workshops are facilitated by SA Sailing only.
    • New to Race Officers need to attend the Workshops for new ROs
    • Existing Race officers will need to attend the renewal/refresher workshops every 4 years in line with newly published RRS for rule updates
    • Additional (CPD) workshops may be run to address and highlight training in specific areas. These are over and above the Theory workshops noted above for new or renewing Race Officals.

Accreditation will only be considered on the completion of the Workshop and receipt of a portfolio of evidence. The application will be reviewed towards appointment.  Written and or practical assessments may apply

The programme is updated regularly to include relevant aspects of the new racing rules, recommended best practices and any updates to the SA Sailing policies and procedures. As a result, additional modules may become required to keep accreditations active.

Programme Outcome

The successful candidate will be able to officiate at competitions up to their accredited level and assist at higher levels of competition.

On completion, the successful candidate will be awarded a SA SailingCertificate applicable to the level applied for.

Course evaluation

Candidates will be assessed on the portfolio of evidence submitted. Written and/or practical assessments may apply.

Applicants will need to upload the following:

  • Portfolio of Evidence(PoE)  which must include dates of events officiated, what level of competition and in what capacity they have been a part of each event noted. The name of the Race officer who mentored the applicant must be included in the PoE provided.
  • The PoE must include the practical elements, that requires that the candidate watch-one-do-one of the level they are applying for. 
    • (watch-one:- done under supervision of a Race Officer appointed by SA Sailing at that level.
    • Do-one: - in direct control of the event with mentoring Race officer on board) 
  • Letters of Recommendation from the Race Officers who mentored the applicant. Additional feedback from classes and/or participants at events officiated at will be beneficial.
  • Attendance at a Race Officer Theory Workshop at a club for Assistant and Club/District level and a Theory SA Sailing facilitated workshop for Regional and National level as is relevant for new and renewing Race officers.

This application will only be reviewed in conjunction with an attendance at a Race Officer Theory Workshop logged with SA Sailing system accordingly as it is relevant for each of the levels.  

All levels of appointment require the Theory and Practical Elements in a complete PoE to be considered ready for review.
