This being my penultimate attempt at communicating something sensible to the South African sailing community, I thought it may be prudent to reflect on that which we as a community hold dear.

I am sure you have heard old salts sprouting forth about a smooth sea that never made a skilled sailor. While I can certainly attest to its truth, I was surprised to find that this proverb cannot be traced back to Nelson, or some Grand Admiral. It seems that this proverb has its roots in the Swahili tradition – first recorded in English as far back as 1842. "Bahari shwari haitoi wanamaji stadi" translates literally to "Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors". Read more...

As part of SA Sailing’s ongoing safeguarding awareness campaign, we remind all members that safeguarding is not just a policy—it is a daily responsibility.

The message is simple: Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

While much of the discussion around safeguarding focuses on children and vulnerable participants, the role of adults is critical in creating and maintaining a safe, respectful and inclusive environment across all levels of sailing. Read more...

Youth Olympics in sight for rising SA windsurfer after Morocco training trip 

KwaZulu-Natal windsurfer Fynn Clulow is taking major strides after gaining invaluable experience at a recent World Sailing Youth Olympic Games (YOG) training camp in Morocco.

This was the third of four training camps, funded through the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity and organised by World Sailing, and was designed to eliminate development barriers and equip African athletes and coaches with the elite technical skills needed to compete at the best of their abilities during the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, in November. Team SA for the 2026 Youth Sailing World Championships

Congratulations to the following sailors who will be representing South Africa at the 2026 Youth Sailing World Championships from 11-19 December in Vilamoura, Portugal.

They are: 

ILCA 6 – Daniela Cantarelli and Blake Madel 

29er mixed team – Scarlet Celliers and James Rae 

Coach/Team: TBC

Both Daniela and Blake will take part in the Emerging Nations Programme, offering valuable coaching and international experience in the build-up to the championships.

SA Sailing Awards for 2025 Sailing Season – Get your votes in!

It’s time to submit your vote for the 2025 Annual SA Sailing Awards covering the period 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025. Submit your vote by selecting the nominee you feel most deserves the award.

This voting process is only for categories where more than one finalist has qualified, and only categories with valid finalists will be awarded. 

Remember that the voting process closes at midnight on 30 June 2026 following which the SA Sailing Council will review the votes received and confirm the winner of each category.

Purpose of the Update

As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening governance, transparency, and ease of engagement, SA Sailing has undertaken a review of the RTC application process. The focus has been on improving clarity, consistency, and usability of the application system for all centres and applicants(and SA Sailing review process and turnaround time thereof). Notice of Race published for the 2026 Offshore Double Handed World Championship

Ahead of the 2026 Offshore Double Handed World Championship, a key event in the offshore sailing calendar, the Notice of Race has formally been published.

Being held in Marseille, France, the event will run from 23 September to 2 October 2026, featuring up to 22 teams, showcasing the growing international appeal of offshore racing.
