  President's Update

President's Update - 2021 is going to be a special year for sailing in South Africa

It has already started, with Peter Sherlock attending his first meeting as Councillor representing the interests of the Cruisers in our community. The Ocean Sailing Association of South Africa (OSASA) is now officially a discipline of South African Sailing, and this association is going to transform the way in which we view our sailing community. The association with OSASA will give SA Sailing new relevance, and OSASA will now be able to achieve its goals with the backing that comes with the credentials of being part of a fully fledged national federation. I hope that the association will allow the cruising community to feel more at home in the SA Sailing fold – and help achieve a better understanding of what SA Sailing has tried to achieve in their interests over the years. read more....

West and East Coast Cruisers

Both West and East Coast cruises took place during the festive season with plenty of enjoyment on both sides of the country…

2020 West Coast Cruise

This enjoyable event, with 26 entries, started on the 26th December with a welcoming evening at Saldanha Bay Yacht Club. Due to Covid restrictions only skippers were allowed to attend. The skippers each in turn introduced themselves and their boats after which they received a bottle of Haven red wine to share with their crew who were waiting back on their boats. The wine was sponsored by Glen Carlo, South Africa, to whom we are very grateful. The skippers also collected the meals for their crew so returned to their boats pretty well loaded down. read more.....

International Cruisers - Around the world in eight years

Dutch cruisers Wietze van der Laan and Janneke Kuysters have been sailing along the coast of South Africa since early November. Their yacht is a steel Bruce Roberts 44, a traditional heavy displacement, semi-long keeled cutter-rigged design. She was built in 1989 in New Zealand and named Anne Caroline van Staeten Landt – after the names of their mothers and the name that Abel Tasman gave to New Zealand.

Wietze and Janneke set off from the Netherlands almost eight years ago now; South Africa is their last stop before they begin their long voyage north, back to Europe. Along the way, they work as journalists for five different international sailing publications including British magazine Yachting World and the Dutch magazine Zeilen. We caught up with them to find out more about their intriguing journey…
