Dear Sailors

Welcome to this, the 80th of the monthly newsletters.

  President's Update

President's Update

Do you remember The Stig on Top Gear? At some point in the programme, Jeremy Clarkson would say something like: “Some say… that he’s wanted by the CIA. Others say… that he sleeps upside-down, like a bat. All we know is, he’s called… The Stig.”
The intrigue was, of course, that The Stig appeared to have super-human (Chuck Norris crossed with Michael Schumacher) abilities and, most importantly, nobody knew who The Stig was.
This month’s newsletter is penned by an equally incognito ghostwriter who is part of a bigger group of invisible sailors. “Some say… they’re always dropping the spinnaker in the water. Others say… they’re never where they’re supposed to be. All we know is, we call them… The Crew.”...Read more...

  Wrap on Youth World Championships

Wrap on Youth World Championships

Massive congratulations go out to our team of young sailors who competed at the Youth Sailing World Championships at Lake Garda this month.
The team of Sean Kavanagh and Max Celliers put in a particularly impressive performance in the boys 29er, picking up a race victory in race 11 and finishing second in race four to claim fifth place overall.
Noah Clulow made his debut at the Youth Worlds event, putting it all out on the water. He finished 50th out of the 62 countries that took part in the male ILCA 6 fleet.
The girls 29er team, Ingrid and Lena Holm, produced some excellent racing results in their third time representing RSA at the Youth Sailing World Championships, finishing 16th in the fleet.
Isabella Keytel also made her debut at the event this year, competing in the girls ILCA 6 fleet. She moved up positions after each race showing just how much she learnt from her time competing. Isabella came home with a 39th place out of the 53 girls that were racing in the fleet.
Congratulations to each of these sailors and their coaches/ team managers. These are excellent results, and we hope you are proud of all that you have accomplished.
Watch this space next month for all the reaction from the awesome SA team that took part.

Access and Tenure on State Dams

Access and Tenure on State Dams

It is not every day that an opportunity falls into our laps.

The Department of Water and Sanitation put out an official tender type enquiry, requesting an "EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - FOR THE SELECTION OF INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE PROPOSALS TO DEVELOP RECREATIONAL AND TOURISM (OR RELATED) ACTIVITIES ON DWS LAND, STATE LAND AND PRIVATELY OWNED LAND ADJACENT TO STATE DAMS ON A DESIGN, BUILT, FINANCE AND OPERATE"

South African Sailing has seen this as an opportunity to get the ear of the authorities at the highest level, and attempt to resolve the issues of Access and Tenure on State Dams well into the future.

Michael has requested that we publish the full document in the newsletter, so that all sailors can understand the thought processes that are involved at the highest levels in South African Sailing. It is a special presentation that needs to be studied to grasp just how important unity in our community really is.

Michael says: "This document shows how interdependent we are - both as individuals, and as clubs and classes. The achievements of one can open doors for others. Very few of the individuals and clubs that will benefit from this proposal have the credentials needed to pull off that to which SA Sailing aspires - BUT, our global picture produces credentials that cannot be argued with. This is a moment when it is easy to see what South African Sailing can do for you. All for one - One for all."

  Controlled Event Status Workshop

Controlled Event Status Workshop

In terms of the National Small Vessel Safety Regulations of 2007, SA Sailing has been authorized by SAMSA to relax the regulations for controlled events, provided suitable compensating safety arrangements are put in place. A special workshop will focus on the details of the application form, the signatures required to complete the form, timelines to be met and to highlight the regulations which may be considered for relaxation.   Lipton Challenge Cup

Lipton Challenge Cup

One of the highlights of the sailing calendar in South Africa, the Lipton Challenge Cup, takes place from 27 – 31 August 2024 when Royal Cape Yacht Club will defend the title they won last year when the contest was sailed off Durban.
Another thrilling event is expected this year as the iconic race celebrates its 70th anniversary. According to the official race website: “Live-streaming of the contest will be available, as will voice bytes to a dedicated Lipton Whatsapp group, and trackers on each yacht enabling followers to view the race live from wherever they are in the world. Obviously, there will be a massive social media presence throughout the contest. “Ashore, an enticing social programme is being prepared for competitors and supporters alike and will include the RCYC “Lipton Legends” who have previously won the Lipton Cup for their Club. “The City of Cape Town is fully behind this 70th contest and backing the Royal Cape Yacht Club to make this one of the best Lipton Cup Contests ever.”
Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Lipton Challenge Cup website and social media feeds for all the updates:

Global Championship coming to Cape Town

Global Championship coming to Cape Town

The Dragon Flite Class Association has awarded their 2026 DF95 Global Championships to Cape Town and will be hosted by Cape Radio Yacht Club. The DF95 class has about 22 000 boat owners worldwide of this strict one-design radio-controlled yacht. This yacht was launched in April 2016 and is now arguably the fastest-growing yacht, albeit a radio-controlled yacht, in the world. South Africa has recently surpassed 200 DF95 owners. Visit the CRYC Website to get an understanding of the DF95 Class - https://www.df95racing.com/
The Globals will be limited to 80 entries and each race will be sailed in 4 x 20 boat heats. Over the 5-day period a total of 92 heats could be sailed. Each member nation will be running a selection process for the selection of their teams. The local Organising Committee is well into its planning of the Championship from 24 to 30 October 2026 at Theewater Sports Club on Theewaterskloof Dam.
As part of the planning, CRYC in conjunction with TSC, are hosting the 2024 DF95 National Championship 21 to 24 September at the same venue.
