  President's Update - May 2021

President's Update

The first of the Highveld frosts are upon us. My world is turning yellow, red and beige. There is a chill in the wind, and a warm jacket next to the door.

But, the sailing news is very heart-warming!

SASCOC formally announced that Alex and Benji will be sailing in Tokyo! What a pleasure! We are very pleased to have these two young men represent us at the Olympics in the 49er class. And just watch closely – I am (not as cautiously this time) optimistic that the next announcement will include the name of Leo Davis to represent us in the Finn class Read more....

SA sailor switches boats to book Olympic spot

If all goes according to plan, South Africa will have two boats in the Olympic sailing programme in Tokyo this year. That’s after Leo Davis secured a qualification spot at last week’s Finn Gold Cup in Portugal to join Benji Daniel and Alex Burger, who qualified in the 49er class.

Davis had initially dreamed of representing the country at the Olympics in rowing but was eventually named as the reserve to the heavyweight pair that competed in Rio five years ago. After four years training with the high-performance squad under national rowing coach Roger Barrow, in 2018 he switched boats, with a view to competing in Tokyo in sailing.Read more...

  MSC Regatta 2021

MSC Week 2021

The Point Yacht Club, Durban will host the MSC Regatta from Saturday 10 July to Friday 16 July 2021.

The MSC Regatta has been sponsored by MSC Shipping for over 20 years. This regatta week in July was first hosted by Point Yacht Club in the early 1980s, known then as Mainstay Week. In the late 1980s, early 1990s, NSC Resins became the title sponsor and the regatta became known as Crystic Week. Since the late 1990s MSC Shipping has been the title sponsor. A big thank you to Captain Sarno of MSC for their steadfast support of this regatta and to sailing in general.

This regatta is a multi-class regatta for Keel boats and Multihulls, offering round the cans racing and medium distance races. Several classes have sailed their National or Regional Championships at this regatta. In 2022 the J22s will be sailing their World Championships during MSC Week.

Durban offers fantastic winter sailing with moderate seas, variable winds, warm water and mild sunny days.
