Western Cape Dinghy Champs race Reports | Saldahna, 24th – 27th April 2010 E-mail
By Kirsten Veenstra
The Western Cape Dinghy Champs, organised by SAS Western Cape, is always an incredibly well-run and organised event, and this year was no exception. The 2010 WC Champs incorporated the Hobie 16 and Mosquito Nationals and had a really great entry of 257 boats. Of these, the biggest classes were the Hobie 16’s (52 entries), Oppie A (30 entries), Dabbie (21 entries) and Laser Radials (20 entries). Sadly missing this year were the Extras and the Fireballs, possibly because many of these sailors decided to leave their dinghies in favour of the Hobie 16 Nationals and were sailing in other classes. A wonderful new edition to the fleet were 19 RS Teras, most from Mossel Bay and False Bay, with many juniors who have just started sailing getting great experience in their first regatta.

The False Bay Offshore Western Cape Dinghy Point Series | 29th – 30th May 2010 Regatta Report E-mail
By Kirsten Veenstra
In the Western Cape Dinghy Points Series calendar, there is only one offshore point series, The False Bay Offshore Points, and this regatta therefore draws a large number of dinghy sailors. This year, despite it being in the middle of school exams, there were a hundred and five entries.  The 420, 29er, Laser, Dabchick, Oppie and Extra fleets were well represented.

On the Water Manners E-mail

The job of the finishing bridge at MAC last weekend was made considerably more difficult because competitors returned through the finish line to the shore after sailing. While this was the direct route, no consideration was given to those on the bridge trying to get accurate finish results. There is no rule to ensure this but it is polite and considerate to keep clear of all start and finish lines while not starting or finishing. Please be aware of this, particularly in confined waters.

Many thanks,
Di Hutton-Squire

WCROA Equipment Hire E-mail

Over the past year or so the notice given by clubs to WCROA (Len Davies) for hire of equipment has become at times almost impossibly short. Len is often away on business for a whole week. It is totally unfair to expect him to produce the equipment required for a regatta at short notice. The bye-law states that at least one months notice must be given. Each club knows long before this that a regatta is to be held. We have now no alternative but to uphold that month’s notice. If, for any reason a request comes in within the month double the fees will be charged as from 1st June 2010.

Mykonos Offshore 2010 E-mail

This event has a certain magnetic appeal to all manner of sailors – from the diminutive Hobie Tigers to the majestic 65ft Doughty and everything in between. A strong organizing committee from RCYC as well as Club Mykonos planned the details to perfection, including the weather, under the careful guidance of Hylton Hale. This is the weather everyone had been waiting for – a decent south easter to get the fleet swiftly to Saldanha. The 2010 entry list topped out at 108 of which 104 finally competed. It is a staggering number of boats considering the restrictions of the capacity of Club Mykonos harbour, which is 55 vessels.
