I am Evelyn Osborne, and I am a woman sailing coach.
I have been coaching sailing for the past 30 years at all levels. My sailing career has been continuous from a young age up until today I have been sailing in Nationals events and International events in GP14 and Laser.

In a thrilling finale to the Lipton Cup, just one point separated the top three after nine races. With everything on the line, it was Aeolians who held their nerve to cross the line first in the final race with Royal Natal Yacht Club in second, Witbank Yacht Club in third, Zeekoevlei Yacht Club in fourth, and Royal Cape Yacht Club in fifth.
South Africa were represented by three sailors at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo – Alex Burger and Benji Daniel in the 49er and Leo Davis in the Finn class.
Competing in their first Olympics, Burger and Daniel did well to achieve a top-10 finish in race 10 but ultimately finished 18th overall, as Britain’s Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell took the gold.
The subject of Transformation or Development in South African Sport is often discussed, lamented and debated. It is widely agreed across all disciplines that transformation/development is needed for the good of the sport and the country.
SA Sailing recently announced two new Recognised Training Centres. MAC Inclusive Aquatic Centre in the Western Cape as well as the Sailing SA Training Centre (who have opened a second training facility at Stilbaai Yacht Club on the Vaal Dam) were recently added to the list of recognised SA Sailing Recognised Training Centres.
Sailing provides a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs with a variety of opportunities. Malusi Marule and Momelezi Funani recently set up Offshore Yacht Services – a yacht management and service company based in Cape Town.
And, just like that, we have reached the end of this
term of office.
