Foreign Registrations and LGSC

If you wish to sail your yacht or power boat to a foreign country a SAS listing is no longer acceptable. You have in addition to get your vessel registered through SAMSA. For a fee SAS can assist you with your SAMSA registration. You are very welcome to go to SAMSA directly, but generally they seem to want yachties to work through SAS to cut down on the administration.

Please recognise that registration is a lengthy process with several potential pitfalls. So we suggest that you allow about 6 months for the process.

Please note that we are considering moving to two price structures – one for standard registrations and one for accelerated registrations. There will be a huge premium for an accelerated registration because they are an absolute nightmare and involve SAS staff driving all over the place delivering documents. So please please please get you application in well in advance.

Please note that if you want to go foreign your annual Certificate of Fitness (CoF) from SAS is not sufficient. You must in addition have a Local General Safety Certificate (LGSC). The safety inspection can no longer be done by a SAS Safety Officer, but has to be done by a “SAMSA approved SAS appointed Safety Surveyor”
